..birth work, I simply answered the call. Sure, birth gets me turnt up but its the nature of my roots that made me feel so aligned to say 'YES!' to doula. My role as your doula doesn’t quite make me a guru in all things birth related. Nevertheless, I am confident in what I DO know and it does mean that I've made the security, esteem, and positive memories of your experience my business, and honey, 'I STAND ON BIDNESS'. My premium services include Traditional Haitian Postpartum care, Sacral Steaming, and Placenta Encapsulation.
..is what initially sparked my interest in decolonizing birth. I'm passionate about sharing the knowledge, security, confidence, and freedom that every mother deserves. I focus on understanding diverse family approaches to birth and how mothers connect with and express themselves. My birth attitude is simple, the epicenter of birth is not just the baby, but to witness the grand transformation that occurs for each family that day; I appreciate every opportunity to do so.
..to use my groovy energy to help guide women on their journey to motherhood, whether it’s their first or fifth time. Be it emotional support, information and resources, physical support, guided meditation, relaxation technique, kicking it for a vent session, be that 'FLAVA in ya ear', or to simply occupy space to assure mama knows she doesn't have to experience birth alone, I would be honored to be a humble servant to your divine encounter; to encourage and walk alongside you through one of life's most powerful transformations while sharing the divine weirdness of motherhood with you.
..gives me the opportunity to be even more intentional about honoring each badass mama for the brilliant power she’s demonstrated, from conception to birth. Carrying life and giving birth is tough ass work and this is a solid way to guide your recovery. One of my primary goals is to encourage mama to maintain optimal mental health. Each session will take place in the comfort and convenience of your home and are adapted to your unique experience.
..that can respond to the needs of women after delivering their beautiful lil' babes. Traditional postpartum care has existed from time immemorial, even when the pilgrims settled in America, they relied heavily on native culture to deliver and nurture their children. As time progressed and that relationship evolved to become increasingly violent, the systems of colonialism began to break down, criminalize, and even gentrify cultural practices immersed in traditions of herbs, herbal baths, foods, juices, teas, and infusions.
..and access to traditional birth keeping. The notion that settlers were superior has since influenced approaches and policies in the governments and institutions. Now, we've got a persisting hierarchy among educational systems as we've relinquished our care and power to the science of western society. Ever since, the officially accredited framework is both colonized and modernized to a western belief system. Consistently, cultural women like myself, as principal nurturers, bust out alternative medicine in the treatment of ill loved ones and in their own self-care, involving traditional therapies, instinctive awareness, and divine ease.
..where compassion in women's health has become unprincipled, black mothers are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts. This is a grim circumstance that needs to change and I believe enlightened black and indigenous doulas and midwives are notable individuals in accepting that challenge as we are the protectors of the portal through which the future is welcomed.
..decolonizing the birth experience is a priority in my work, returning to traditions and aiming to look after building strength, happiness, and bonding in a growing family. I aim to creatively combine modalities of traditional Haitian postpartum care with education, encouragement, and empowerment - mind, body, and soul. My practices as a Haitian postpartum doula require unconditional presence to focus on concepts of warmth and rest needed to heal, while removing the weight from mama’s shoulders so she can prioritize her recovery and learn to express her needs for support since being reluctant breeds feelings of resentment.
..throughout birth during the postpartum period because she has opened herself up physically, emotionally, and spiritually to allow herself to surrender for childbirth. I do so by offering foods and beverages with warming properties, such as water based, herb infused cacao. I then encourage mama to remain fully covered to maintain body heat, and offer leaf baths known as 'bain fey'. After the leaf baths, mama may continue to steam her yoni until she's reached a distinguished level of healing her womb.
I was fortunate to have my mama hold me down postpartum after both of my children. In Haitian culture and many native civilizations, after a baby is born, their entire village works together as reflections of one another to assure a smooth recovery for the new mama while tools, herbs, and knowledge passed on from ancestors are offered to her. I was also served Traditional Mexican postpartum care by my beautiful mama-friend and doula, Serymar. It was sweet to connect and learn the tiny cultural differences in herbs and processes while honoring our specific protocols from pregnancy to postpartum that encompass and relentlessly promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
The versatile piece is a sacred woven garment native to Mexican culture and humbly shared among others. Recognizing Mexican vibes is deeper than Cinco de Mayo and Taqueria's for me; it's important to honor nations that've introduced or exchanged methods and tools with us so that our legacy of community support can ripple for eons!
The Rebozo is a long cotton shawl, considered as an extension of the arms, and is used as a tool of parasympathetic support. It's been known to help laboring women reserve energy, push more effectively, and reduce overall discomfort. It works to return the body back into alignment after carrying and delivering baby. It can also be used to support mama's back and hips as she recovers, then later used as a sling to wear the baby. FIRE, right? I knowww!
Here at Marabou Mama, we call it a 'Sacral Steam'. It's a serious throwback holistic practice. Many women use it as a relaxation ritual while others swear by benefits.
Steaming may help to increase blood flow to the vagina, prevent odor, infections and BV while promoting natural regulation of the pH balance since the vagina is already self cleaning.
Postpartum, steaming can assist with postpartum contractions, lochia, and hemorrhoids while offering comfort from swollen lady bits. I've carefully selected my sources for the herbs used to ensure you receive the highest benefit and most revitalizing experience!
When crafting the herbs utilized for steaming, I look for herbal properties such as cleansing, blood building, hydrating, disinfecting, and digestive support. I'm always willing to whip up a custom blend of steam herbs or herbal tea from the bounty of herbs available in my apothecary to suit your needs.
medicinal plant oils to the tissues of the womb through the steam, freeing stagnant elements that cause discomfort during the postpartum and menstrual cycles.
for nourishing sensitive vaginal tissues, regulating menstrual cycles, reducing menstrual pain, while supporting natural fertility and reproductive health.
it softens and opens the porous and absorbent vaginal tissues and brings increased oxygenated circulation to the reproductive system by applying gentle heat.
